I’M NOT CHINESE

Just as many Europeans have asked me, I ask them in return,
“Are you Chinese?”
Even though it is clear from their appearance that they are not.
This work explores the racial prejudices we form and accept based on physical appearance, and the confusion such prejudices can cause in one’s personal identity.
The video consists of two main parts. One features a series of short interviews with various individuals, while the other shows a Chinese woman stating in Chinese, “This person is not Chinese,” as she addresses the stereotypes that Europeans often hold about the East.
Her words are simultaneously interpreted into English, French, and Spanish—languages that broadly represent the Western world—allowing the audience to hear all versions at the same time. In this moment, viewers become aware of the contrast between the languages they understand and those they do not. Through this contrast, they are led to reexamine and reaffirm their own unique cultural identities.
많은 유럽 사람들이 내게 묻듯, 나도 그들에게 묻는다.
“당신은 중국 사람입니까?”
그들의 외형적인 모습은 분명 중국인이 아님에도 불구하고 말이다.
이 작업은 우리가 외형적인 특징을 바탕으로 판단하고 쉽게 믿어버리는 인종적 편견, 그리고 그로 인해 발생하는 개인 정체성의 혼란을 다룬다.
이 비디오는 크게 두 부분으로 구성되어 있다. 하나는 다양한 사람들의 짧은 인터뷰들로 이루어진 파트이며, 다른 하나는 한 중국 여성이 중국어로 “이 사람은 중국 사람이 아니다”라고 말하며, 유럽인들이 동양에 대해 가지고 있는 편견을 드러내는 장면이다.
이 여성의 말은 영어, 프랑스어, 스페인어 등 서구를 대표하는 여러 언어로 동시통역되어, 관람자는 이를 같은 시간에 함께 듣게 된다. 이때 관람자는 자신이 이해할 수 있는 언어와 이해할 수 없는 언어를 구분하고 비교하게 되며, 이를 통해 자신이 가진 고유한 문화적 정체성을 다시 한 번 확인하게 된다.
